Dit is de titel van het proefschrift waarop drs. C. J. Vos te Dordrecht vandaag promoveert tot doctor in de godgeleerdheid. Als promotor treedt op prof. dr. N. H. Ridderbos. summary The need for a study on „Woman in Old Testament Worship" is evident from the fact that despite the many discussions of the place of women in the church and society today httle attention is given to the Old Testament data. In this thesis attention is given to the manner in which woman is depicted in the first three chapters of Genesis, and further against the intensely androcentric character of the Old Testament world. Special attention is given to the manner in which woman is dealt with in Israel's cultic laws since it may be assumed that the laws reflect an attitude or mentality which was quite constant throughout Israel's history. A study is made of the various acts of worship by women which are recorded in the Old Testament. The prophetesses of the Old Testament are discussed as well as the reasons why Israel did not have an order of priestesses. The conclusions arrived at are that despite the fact that the male is given a dominant place in the social and/or legal world of that day, it is correct to say that, religiously considered, woman is not inferior to man. Furthermore, although it is natural that the male takes a place of leadership in the ancient androcentric world the fact that prophetesses were accepted with such readiness indicates that the writers of the Old Testament did not consider it in principle improper that a woman assume an office and/or place of leadership.

personalia Clarence John Vos is op 15 augustus 1920 te Richland, Iowa, USA, geboren. Na zijn studie in de theologie was hij enkele jaren in dienst van een kerk te Washington en daarna te Paterson, New Jersey. In 1961 werd hij verbonden aan het Calvin College en kreeg daar tevens de gelegenheid om zijn doctoraal studie te voltooien. In 1963 kwam de heer Vos naar Nederland, waar hij zich bij de Vrije Universiteit liet inschrijven. Sinds 1965 is hij predikant van de Engels-sprekende kerk (Pügrim Fellowship) te Dordrecht. Binnenkort gaat de promovendus weer terug naar de Verenigde Staten. Thans luidt zijn adres: Sm. Hugo van Gijnweg 119, Dordrecht.

Van 29-31 maart wordt op Kerk en Wereld een conferentie over eugenese belegd door de medische, biologische en sociale faculteitsverenigingen voor studenten aan de Vrije Universiteit onder auspiciën van de Disputorenraad. Prof. dr. P. van Duijn, biochemicus uit Leiden, zal zaterdag spreken over manipuleren met genetisch materiaal — een toekomstperspectief? Prof. dr. G. J. Kloosterman van de Universiteit van Amsterdam zal het standpunt van de medicus t.a.v. eugenetische maatregelen ter sprake brengen. Met drs. G. H. ter Schegget, zondagmiddag, zal een en ander ethisch worden geëvalueerd. Aftrap van de conferentie zal verricht worden door een gesprekskring over eugenese door zijn bevindingen te rapporteren. Prof. Van Duijn zal èn vrijdag èn zaterdag aanwezig zijn; prof. Kloosterman de zaterdag. Mej. dr. S. Wagenaar, verbonden aan de Vrije Universiteit, zal het gehele weekend aanwezig zijn.
