The programme is very much comparable to the PhD programmes of the best universities of the US. The first year provides rigorous training in the core subjects and tools of economics: microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics, statistics, and econometrics. The second year allows for specialization in a wide array of fields, such as econometrics, finance, labour economics, and economic theory. The programme leads to a Master of Philosophy Degree in Economics. It is part of a five­year PhD track in economics, but is

also an excellent preparation for a career in consulting or policy advice. The programme has been accredited by the Dutch and Flemish Accreditation Organisation for higher education (NVAO). All courses are exclusively organised for students of the Tinbergen Institute. All courses are taught in English on the institutes premises in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

Applicants must have completed (at least) a bachelors diploma, preferably in economics, econometrics, mathematics, or physics (or it's equivalence i.e. entering the 4th year of the drs programme). Since the programme is demanding, only excellent and ambitious students are admitted. To this end, a thorough selection is part of the admissions procedure. At the moment, 50% of the students come from abroad, e.g. from Poland, Russia, Romania, Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Indonesia, China, and the US.
