Being a person who loves traveling, Chen Fleisher met a lot of Dutch people abroad who came across as open and friendly. "I thought, these are people I can connect with!", he says. What he learned when he settled down in Holland is that it takes a long time to enter a circle of friends "I found it hard at the beginning. Israelis are much more open." Chen pursued his bachelor and master's degree in international business administration at VU University. Although he started off as an average student, he got more focused towards the end of his bachelor and during his master. He holds a master's degree with the academic distinction cum laude, won the best student award of his faculty in 2009, and received a Mozaïek (NWO) grant for his PhD proposal. The reason for his focus is that he found a topic that really enthuses him. "My topic is career behavior. I'm conducting research on the link between career development and organizational outcomes How do individuals influence organizations through their career behavior?"

Chen is very good at discerning opportunities, and there are many of those in the Netherlands. "Contrary to the Netherlands, the social system in Israel is largely influenced by the Jewish culture, as weU as by the American way. It thus recognizes the abilities of individuals and pushes for excellence. In the Netherlands this is much less the case." However, Chen realizes that although the environment here isn't as encouraging as where he comes from, people can stiU strive for excellence on their own - that is, as long as they stay within the boundaries of the Dutch cultural norms. Chen's approach to life is to try to be good at what he is doing. He believes that every person has potential. "Currently I am enjoying teaching as part of my PhD program. I can recognize the students' attitudes. They expect the teacher to do everything for them, and only focus on doing their assignments, rather than on learning. Zaag Mijn vader heeft vorige maand zijn duim doormidden gezaagd met een elektrische tafelcirkelzaag. Verticaal doormidden, dus vanaf net achter de nagel tot de aanhechting aan zijn hand. Een typisch geval van zo'n handeling die je nooit voor elkaar had gekregen als je het expres deed. Zoals een basketbal vanuit de tribune door het net gooien, een halfuur door de storm fietsen en dan perfect haar hebben, een eitje halfzacht koken zonder de tijd bij te houden, of, nou ja, vul zelf maar iets in. Maar om even terug te komen op mijn vader, die daar dus in de garage (of, zoals hij het zelf noemt, in zijn atelier) stond met een in tweeen gezaagde duim. als je gewond bent, schijntje lichaam hormonen aan te maken waardoor je niet alleen geen pijn meer voelt, maar ook heel helder en strategisch gaat denken. In zijn geval leidde dat ertoe dat hij naar mijn moeder riep of ze even een handdoek naar beneden wilde gooien, die om zijn hand wikkelde, en daarna pas naar haar toe liep om te vragen of ze, als ze klaar was met de was ophangen, even een ambulance wilde bellen. Inmiddels is hij al drie keer geopereerd en de duim zit er weer aan, want dokters kunnen van alles tegenwoordig. Vroeger ook al, maar daar ga ik het nu niet over hebben. De enige tegenslag was dat het bovenste kootje geamputeerd moest worden. Mijn vader heeft nu dus nog maar een halve duim en dat is natuurlijk zieUg, maar om redenen waar ik nog niet echt een vinger achter heb gekregen (HA!) past het ook wel bij hem. Bij zijn status als grootste en sterkste man van de wereld, bedoel ik, zoals vaders dat plegen te zijn, de mijne in het bijzonder. Als ik mijn bril op heb, zeggen mensen ook vaak dat die bij me past, terwijl halfblind zijn toch een handicap is. Dus vind ik datje ook best mag zeggen dat een geamputeerd lichaamsdeel bij iemand kan passen. Mits het om kleine stukjes gaat, en niet om complete ledematen en/of vitale organen, want anders gaat het natuurlijk ook wel weer erg ver, dat geef ik toe. Op dit punt dient de vraag zich aan wat ik hier nu allemaal mee wil zeggen. Tja, dat weet ik ook niet, maar het gaat in ieder geval niet wéér over dat proefschrift dat af moet.
