Micael Schneider From Norway I ^ e : 211 Study: Economics and Business Administration, tliree montlis exchange programme, bachelor

Micael is from Norway. He is here to retrace his partly Dutch roots. He always wanted to study in The Netherlands and he jumped at the opportunity when he discovered that his home university was cooperating with the VU in an exchange study programme. Micael has pretty much sorted out his future. He is determined to get into an international programme where he can take his study of business and economics to the next level. He hopes for a job in an international business environment, but would also linger a bit in the academic professional environment before that. When I met him for his photo, he had been spending his entire day in the library. I was impressed and slightly embarrassed as I hadn't managed to do that until that time. adjusting to this new place, was significantly made easier by the international environment at the VU. He has met people from around the world, all of them just as open and eager as him to find out new things. Micael has left us this winter holiday, but he hopes to return to The Netherlands after he finishes his study in Norway. Micael had some pretty original ideas for spending time, he suggests some tv-series other students might enjoy, Uke Big Bang Theory and Walking Dead. These can really relax you ifyou've been busy studying. His next suggestion is to write a postcard to your grandmother because she will really appreciate it and it only takes you a few minutes to do it. I did it and am proud of it. Micael is surely missing Amsterdam and the VU right about now, but he is sure to come back as he found a little bit of himself in the open mindedness and assertiveness of the Dutch people. Twijfel Soms, als ik weer eens na negenen thuiskom, twijfel ik of ik wel het juiste beroep heb gekozen. Jammer genoeg kan ik niks bedenken dat me leuker lijkt dan arts zijn. Sterker nog, laatst kwam ik een beroep tegen dat zo een ereplaatsje kreeg op mijn lijstje 'beroepen die ik nooit zou wiUen uitoefenen': autojournalist. Dat bestaat dus. Een journalist die zich uitsluitend toelegt op nieuws vergaren en publiceren over auto's. Als iets me totaal niet interesseert, zijn het auto's. Pas aan het einde van mijn studie besloot ik toch maar mijn rijbewijs te halen, het moest ooit gebeuren. En wat was ik bHj dat ik mijn rijbewijs had toen ik tijdens mijn coschappen mevrouw Hoogstraten onder mijn hoede kreeg. Mevrouw Hoogstraten was ronduit onaardig. Eerst dacht ik nog dat ze een beetje moest wennen aan de ziekenhuisomgeving, dat ze angstig was. Maar die positieve gedachte vervloog al snel toen ze een zwakbegaafde patient met naaldenangst toevertrouwde dat ze zojuist geprikt was en dat het onmetelijk veel pijn deed. Toen ze slecht nieuws had gekregen van de specialist, vroeg ik belangstellend hoe het gesprek gegaan was. "Wat is dat voor domme vraag?" bitste ze. "Slecht natuurlijk, dat had je zelf ook wel kunnen bedenken." De man van mevrouw Hoogstraten had veel vrienden, maar die verdwenen toen hij driejaar geleden overleed. Dat haar karakter die verwijdering misschien wel had veroorzaakt, kwam niet in haar op. Ik deelde haar een paar dagen na opname mee dat ze weer naar huis mocht. "Dat kan helemaal niet, de kennissen die mij gebracht hebben zijn op vakantie." Ze trok een gezicht alsof het gesprek bij deze beëindigd was. "Dan neemt u de bus." Ze schudde haar hoofd. "Die stopt niet bij mijn huis in de buurt." "Nou, een taxi dan", reageerde ik geërgerd. "Ben je gek, dat is veel te duur." "Mevrouw, u zult toch echt een oplossing moeten bedenken." Ze zuchtte: "Dat is niks voor mij. Mijn man regelde die zaken altijd. Ik ga niet weg." Uiteraard ging mevrouw Hoogstraten wel met ontslag. Toen had ik al besloten dat ik nooit zo afhankelijk wilde worden. Ik nam me plechtig voor een auto te kopen. Eenjaar later is daar nog niks van terechtgekomen: waar begin je als je niks van auto's weet? Had ik maar autojournalist moeten worden.
