Resumerende, kunnen we zeggen, dat het door Kuyper gelegde fundament goed was, doch dat het de taak van zijn volgehngen zal zijn om, zonder tot het door hem zo zeer verfoeide epigonisme af t e dalen, verder te bouwen, met eerbied denkend aan deze theoloog-filosoof-rcchtsgeleerde-staatsman ; Doctor Abraham Kuyper. Summary Dr Abraham Kuyper (1837—1920), founder of the Free University of Amsterdam and professor of theology at this institution (1880—1908), was a man of universal education, easily acquiring a broad knowledge about subjects outside his own domain. Scientists of Calvinistic conviction lacking he was, like soms of his colleagues, obliged to treat problems of natural science in his publications, especially from a philosophic point of view. His most important paper in this respect was his oration „Evolutie" (1899). His belief that it is God who is revelating Himself in nature, not only in a vague and unseizable manner, but as the instructor of the plowman (Isaiah 28 : 24—26) and by analogy as the teacher of the scientist, urged him to propagate the experimental study of nature amongst his followers. On the other side his natural ability and the love of his heart did not incline to experimental research, which he could not consider to be a really scientific work. In principle he separated the revelation of God in nature from Holy Scripture and stated that each of them had its own sphere of validity, but when it came to the point he subjected the results of physical science to the verdict of the Bible.
