59 THE PAST HISTORY OF JAPAN CHRISTIAN MEDICAL SOCIETY In the spring of 1938 the Christian students of Nagoya Univ Medical school set up a small clinic m Nagoya city m order to decrease the death-rate of infants and children chiefly due to malnutrition and they succeeded in it During the summer vacaition of 1938, several Christian med students of Kyoto Univ Medical school, accompanied by a Christian professor and three Christian doctors, visited China to set up a clinic m Taisoken (near Shanghai, China) for the helpless Chinese people suffering because of the sinful war Then the Christian students group of Kansai district came to this conclusion, that they would be more effectual by working together rather than working alone Thus m the winter of 1938 Christian students, professors and doctors met together from various places of Japan at Kyoto Univ YMCA auditorium to found the Christian Medical League At this meeting they decided to send a Medical Mission group to China during the summer vacation of 1938, and 24 members went to Wuhu (not so far from Nanking), including doctors, medical students and nurses, to serve -the helpless patients and refugees m China Their efforts and peaies bore fine fruit as the Christian Hospital, named „Choten Hospital" m the slum of Nanking city, on December Ist, 1943, with the aid of Chinese and Japanese YMCA and Chinese people, and some doctors and nurses devoted themselves to this work until the end of the World War II From about 1941, when the war was getting worse, many members were called to the front, which made it impossible to carry on any good work of this group However the members of the group never lost faith m their venture and never gave up the hope of realizing again the ideals of service to suffering humanity After the end of the war, as many former members returned from front, they all had one desire to help those m need, and were praying quietly to be able to get together again In the excitement and confusion after the war they had the first meeting, which had for its purpose the reconstruction of a similar group m Tokyo, in Nov 1946, and this movement stimulated many Christians m medical field Some established a Christian Hospital at Kmugasa, 80 medical students and doctors went to farm-villages, where there were no medical services, to help poor farmers, and others set many emergency clinics at the time of disasters, caused by earthquakes, floods, or typhoons etc , which occurred every year Through these activities they got many new friends throughout Japan and they were able to hold a convention at Kmugasa Hospital on Y—8, Jan 1949 and about 70 representatives came fiom many places of Japan The convention theme was ,,Gospel and Medicine" Here the Japan Christian Medical Society was formally organized by the Christians m medical, dental and pharmacological fields and others, who have the intention to work or are much interested in these movements As described m her constitution, the aim of this society is that, it consists of Christians, who are working in the medical profession, and want to deepen their mutual relationship in the name of God, and to cooperate m studying the medicine and developing medical mission work through Christianity The society belongs to no definite denominations, academical cliques, or any former organizations Dr E Nagamatsu, the professor of Anatomy m Nagoya Univ school of Medicine, was elected as the president of the new society We had the second annual convention at Nagoya in Jan 1950, the chief theme was „How to enlarge the
