23 but it exercised, indirectly by its adherents, a strong influence on cultural life. Apart from this movement another nucleus of opposition was forming in the established church (Dutch Reformed Church). This group consisted of simple pious people, who lived in accordance with the teachings in the Holy Scriptures and the creeds built upon them. They could not understand how their ministers, instead of submitting to what God has revealed to them in his Word and handing it down without criticism, attach a greater value to virtue and reason than tho the centuries old conceptions of sin and mercy. This movement was dogmatic, democratic, better organised and, though deeply religious, yet more reasoned than the pietistic „Reveil'. It has, throughout the years, caused a fermenting process in the life of the Dutch Reformed Church, occasioned repeated schisms to which the so-called Reformed Churches (Gereformeerde Kerken) owe their origin. The members of the Chr. Ass. of Physicists and Physicians are drawn from the Dutch Ref. Ch. (Ned. Hervormde Kerk) and the Ref. Ch. (Gereformeerde Kerk) and also from the circle of the revivalists, who look beyond strictly maintained barriers, who reconcile opponents, alleviate grief and discern in the relativity of all Christian systems the smile of God's love. Thus on 20.12.1895 four men decided to do everything in their power to found the Chr. Ass. of Ph. and Ph. Their names may be gratefully and reverently mentioned here: Dr H. W. Bakhuis Roozeboom; Lectvirer of chemistry in the University of Leyden and the physicians Dr S. R. Hermanides, Th. G. den Houter and E. A. Keuchenius. „It required a strong faith and great confidence in the power of Christian principles to take such a decision. It was in the days of the 19th century when science was still under the spell of the dogma of Evolution and Materialism subjugated the results of scientific research to its propaganda while waging a bitter war against Christianity, in the bosom of which Modernism, accepting the supremacy of scientific thought, undermined the foundations of the Christian Faith. It was the time when it was believed that faith was beneath the dignity of a scientific mind, when the Christian doctor and the Christian physicist could not but feel lonely." (Sizoo, Orgaan 1946, p. 140). The principles of the Association were defined by them als follows : Art. 1. The Christian Association of Physicists and Physicians has for its aim the cultivation of the whole field of science and medicine in the light of the Holy Scripture. Art. 2. The chief principle of the Association is the implicit authority of the Holy Scriptures as the Word of God. These articles have remained unchanged since its foundation and have been guiding principle. Professor Sizoo writes : „I think I must understand the determinative elements of the principles to be:
