However, the Medical Faculty remained in an embryonal state until greater possibilities were opened by a change in the Higher Education Act (1947), which provided considerable financial support to the denominational higher education. Now it became possible for the Roman Catholic University at Nijmegen as well as for the F r e e University to receive the greater part of the costs of a Medical Faculty for buildings, laboratories etc. under certain conditions. T h e State Universities being overcrowded with students without sufficient adaptation, the growth of new medical faculties relieved the State of the obligation of taking important measures itself. Nevertheless, owing to the very high costs of a medical school, several h u n d r e d thousands of guilders must stille b e provided b y private funds, which means much tor a country impoverished as a result of war and loss of colonies. In 1950 three other professors were appointed, and, beginning in 1951, t h e Faculty will provide the medical education u p to the „candidates" examination, which is usually taken after 3 years. All energies are concentrated on the aim of a complete Faculty, which will provide also the second part of the medical education. This requires, however, a large University hospital which has b e e n planned. W e may hope that this scope will b e reached within a not too distant future, remembering the device of the students' Association of this university: nil desperandum Deo duce.

C'est en 1880 qu'Abraham Kuyper fonda a Amsterdam Tumversite libre, c.a.d. une unversité indépendante de tout influence de I'Etat. Les professeurs sont d'une confession profestante positive. Au debut iln'y avait que 5 professeurs et 13 étudiants, mais aujourd'hui nous y comptons 37 professeurs, 15 chargés de cours et 1300 étudiants. L'université subsiste par Ie prière et par l'argent des petits gens. Elle a une reputation mondiale et les étudiants d'autres pays viennent en grand nombre y suivre des cours tandis que les relations avec rétranger se mamtiennent au moyen d'un journal international. La necessité d'une faculté de médecme, s'y fait sentir, c'est pour cela que l'on a commence en 1907 par construire une clinique de psychiatrie qui a une grande influence sur Ie développement de la psychiatrie un sens anthropoligique. Puis par suite d'une modification des lois nous avions la chance en 1947 d'agrandissement en partie aux frais de l'Etat car les universités de l'Etat étaient surpeuplées Par conséquent on pouvait y faire des études de médecme jusqu'a la licence en 1951. Cependant cela n'est pas suffisant pour toute l'étendue des études car il nous faut pour cela un grand hópital universitaire. Nil desperandum deo duce, qui est Ie devise du corps d'étudiants de cette université, nous aidera a surmonter toutes les difficultés que nous aurons encore si nous voulons réaliser ce grand projet.
