56 circulated between the different members, who sent with the book a greeting and any thoughts they might have in the questions under discussion. Among those taking part in this circle may be noted several colleagues whose names were even then well-known, not to mention those who have since gained recognition. Among their number were the temperamental, white-bearded Dr Heimbeck from Oslo, the wisely thoughtful Dr P. D. Koch from Copenhagen and the Swedes Ribbing, afterwards a medical missionary, and Ramstrom, afterwards Professor of Anatomy in Upsala. Among the subjects that were discussed may be noted the always burning topic of the physician's duty to bear witness of Christ also in words. Further, the more theoretical subject of Christ's exorcism of evil spirits, and finally, the then topical matter of legalized prostitution. When one looks through the records it is interesting to see how the different temperaments emerge in these discussions, at the same time as the devotion to Christ characterizing all those taking part is abundantly evident. While the book was still circulating, the Danish Christian Physicians' Association had been formed in 1897. Impulses from this body emanated in the first place to Sweden, and by very personal channels. The chairman of the Danish Christian Physicians' Association, Johannes Brodersen, was a patient of Dr Kugelberg's before the latter went out to India as a medical missionary, and Carl Löwenhjelm was treated as a patient by Professor Saugman at the Vejlefjord Sanatorium — and these two, together with Dr Henrik Berg, took part as guests in the annual meetings of the Christian Physicians' Association. Then on the 14th of June 1912 a number of Danish doctors, including Schmidt, Saugman and Balslev, came to Stockholm after the annual meeting as the guests of Swedish colleagues who were fellow-believers. Contributions from Swedish physicians were also published in „Meddelelser", the periodical of the Danish association. Some Swedish doctors took part in the 25th anniversary of The Danish Christian Physicians' Association in Roskilde in 1922. This meeting provided the impulse, from 1923 onwards, for regular meetings of the Swedish Christian physicians. When Dr Schou was appointed chairman of the Danish Christian Physicians' Association 1929 he began to work more systematically for cooperation between Christian medical circles in the other Nordic countries. He visited Sweden, Norway and Finland. And from the annual meetings in Denmark in 1930 and 1931 invitations were sent out to Norwegian and Swedish medical men, and many of them accepted. Rector Manfred Björkqvist, since Bishop of Stockholm, had made it a part of his program to t r y to bring together groups representing different professions for informal intercourse at the Sigtuna Foundation. Dr Schou had been invited to the first conference between physicians and members of the clergy in Sigtuna in 1933. On this occasion he gathered around him a group of Swedish colleagues and urged them to arrange a Nordic meeting of Christian physicians in Sweden. The result of this initiative was the meeting in Bastad in 1934. This meeting was attended by many colleagues from Sweden, Norway and Denmark who were delighted at this opportunity of personal intercourse with fellow believers; and the Norwegians declared themselves willing to act as hosts at the meeting to be held 3 years later. This meeting, which was held on the 4th and 5th of September on Hösbjörg, was attended by many participants from Norway, Denmark and Sweden, and there was even one representative from Finland. On another occasion a certain person had expressed to me his pleasure over the fact that so many Christians become doctors. I replied: „I think it is still more gratifying v/hen qualified physicians become Christians"'. And Ihis gratification I was to experience in rich measure on Hösbjörg. Under the influence of the Oxford group many colleagues, especially from Norway, had become Christians, and were now eager to bear witness to their new
