31 NURSING EDUCATION. The Christian Hospitals of India pioneered m the training of Nurses Through members of the Nurses Auxiliary schemes for Nurses training were early drawn up and were so satisfactory that m some states their examinations are recognized by Government for registration A census of nurses 15 years ago revealed that over 80 % of the Nurses m India (which included Pakistan at that time) were Christian and 85 % of the Christians were the product of Christian Training Schools. While the increased recruitment of War years has changed this proportion somewhat a majority of nurses are still Christian and Christian trained The training of Christian nurses is, with the training of Christian teachers perhaps one of the things which India most appreciates Recent developments in this field are the es4;ablishment of one year post graduate courses m two Christian Hospitals and the opening at Vellore of the second College of Nursing m all India, giving the Bachelor of Science Degree. Its first class of seven was graduated m 1950. EVANGELISM There is a growing emphasis on evangelistic methods apart from the silent witness of loving service which m the past has bulked so large m Christian Hospitals Overworked doctors who in the past have frowned upon Hospital Chaplains because of the fear that they themselves might be tempted to shirk the evangelistic responsibility that they feel, are now realising the tremendous need for more evangelistic work m the hospitals and are calling for full time chaplains. Attempts are being made by the Association to interest the Theological Seminaries in this need and it is good to know that a special course in the Hospital Chaplaincy is being established m the Seminary at Bareilly OTHER FUNCTIONS, a Hospital Supply Agency Under the auspices of the Association a purchasing agency has been set up in Bombay m 1948 with capital loaned by the members and hospitals, for the supply of drugs and other supplies to Christian institutions at cost, b. Surveys. The Christian Medical Association has conducted two surveys of Christian Medical Work m the countries in which it works The first one ^) m 1928 was the first such and rendered a great service m presenting the work m its outreach The second ten years later <*) emphasized more the personal touch m the Ministry of Healing as carried on m these countries The Association is at present engaged in a study of the future Policy of Christian Medical Work which may result m the carrying out of a third survey. 2) 2)
