19 other side is of another sort and can only be experienced in another way. Science now recognises that much in life can be explained but not life itself. Not until this is understood there is again room for the respect for the mystery of life and this makes us free for experiences which arise from life itself and enables us to listen to the Word spoken to us from another world and wliich will never return empty and will be realised in us and bear fruit. In psycho-therapy we see the same process of growth. Freud saw this as pure natural science with a well-defined methodology: an analysis taken up mechanically. But psycho-analysis meets also with insuperable obstacles. Then it discovered the great importance of „transference" and saw that recovery was only possible if transference was removed. Thus psycho-analysis had also to recognise the mystery of life, to learn the respect of what is hidden. This is only possible if we feel in ourselves a serious craving not only for explaining but also for seeing, acting und helping. In my opinion it is a decisive turning point in science that it has really seen its limitations. By this we can again be ready to experience by acting what we cannot explain and thus we are again free in ministering to others, to the patients, for love of one's fellow-man. Thus healing art is at the same time aware of its richness, but also of its poverty and limitations. Wisdom goes with humility and in humility we listen to the Word of the Holy Ghost, which is not a Ghost of timidity but of power and love and moderation. Thus committed to the discipline of strict objectiveness, we shall give the vigour of head and heart, ready to surrender and sacrifice, to minister and help our brothers who are suffering and in distress. Only through the alliance with our fellow-creatures we learn to understand ourselves and them better. We are aware of our limitations in body and soul (by fatigue, hunger, our moods, but also in our readiness to take in the Word of God); yet also when we do not notice it, God speaks to us, God who works both the willing and the performing. As physicians and as theologians we should know these two things very well: that we are bound in the flesh, but that God's infinite grace and mercy are granted even in the flesh. In this our humility should be rooted, but also our ardent desire to experience the alliance with our fellow-man in our profession, the fellow-man whom just as physicians we see so often submitted to death or threatened with death. From this point a new medicine gets another and new trend as well in the scientific part as in the practising of our profession: Science in its never ending way in quest of truth, our profession in understanding men whom we have to see under the commandment of love and charity as the many members of the one body of Christ Jesus. Yet we have not the free disposal of such a healing art without more ado; should we think this, then we are certainly on the wrong road. But a task has been set to us. „Not as though I had already attained, but I follow after, if that
