28 FINANCES. Up until 1948 the Association was self supporting, the source of its funds being memberships at Rs. seven ($ 1.75 at present exchange) plus annual donations from the Christian Hospitals and dispensaries. No set limit is imposed but hospitals are invited to contribute at the rate of Rs. 1/8/— about 35 c.) per bed and dispensaries at the rate of Rs. 10 (about $ 2) for each 10,000 new admissions. Since 1948 help has had to be solicited from the West, about one half of the budget of Rs. 34,800 ($ 7325) being contributed by Churches in North America and Great Britain. RELATIONS WITH CHRISTIAN MEDICAL INSTITUTIONS. There is no direct connection between the Association and Christian Hospitals and other medical institutions. Actually, however, because of the fact that a majority of its members are on the staff of such institutions and because of the services rendered to them by the Association there is close relationship. The Association Secretariat is appealed to by such institutions for advice in matters of building, staffing, and administration. There are at present about 250 Christian Hospitals, an equal number of Christian Dispensaries, eight Christian Tuberculosis Sanatoria and fifty Leprosy Institutions within the purview of the Association. Because there is a regional Secretary for the Mission to Lepers, the Association has relatively little concern with these last altho its Secretaries visit them in the course of their travels and work in co-operation with the Secretary of the Mission to Lepers. RELATIONSHIP TO THE CHURCH. The Christian Medical Association of India was responsible for the development of the principle that „The Ministry of Healing is an essential part of the work of the Christian Church, whose mission it is to represent God as revealed in Jesus Christ." This principle was accepted at the Jerusalem Conference and is now a recognized principle. With the shift in emphasis in these countries from the Mission to the Church the Medical Work is being more closely associated with it than in the past. One of the results of this has been the annual observance of Hospital Sunday on the second Sunday of February each year. On this Sunday the services of the churches are especially devoted to remembrance of the Ministry of Healing, rededication of Medical Workers, the offerings of the Church's prayers and substance for this work. In many cases Hospital Staffs take over the entire service of a church for that day. RELATIONSHIPS WITH GOVERNMENT. The Association acts as the representative of the Christian hospitals and its members in dealings with Government. This has taken the form of representations to Government with reference to custom duties and import licenses for import of hospital supplies, recognition of Christian Hospitals as charitable institutions and the securing of recognition of foreign medical degrees for registration. As in America the registration lies with the individual state bodies and has differed greatly from state to state, some of them licensing holders of American degrees provided that they worked in charitable institutions and others refusing to recognize them at all. The latter situation has prevailed throughout India with reference to all foreign medical degrees except those of the British Commonwealth since 1948. However, largely as a result of representation by this Association the All India Medical Council has now approved of the recognition of foreign medical degrees from reputable institutions provided the holders are engaged in charitable institutions on a non profit basis and we expect soon enabling legislation which will provide for this throughout the country. SHARING OF EXPERIENCE AND COUNSELLING. The major function of the Association is to act as a clearing house for the mutual
