L'Association soutient le principe que le ftraitement des maladies constitue une part essentielle de la mission de l'Eglise chrétienne. Ce principe fut accepté par la conférence de Jerusalem. L'Association publie, entre autres travaux, une revue qui parait tous les deux mois. Une des formes de son activité se manifeste en outre dans le grand intérêt qu'elle porte a la formation des médecins, intérêt qui l'a amenée a fonder la célèbre Ecole de hautes études médicales de Vellore. Mitglied kann jeder christliche Arzt werden, der ein vollwertiges medizinisches Examen abgelegt hat. In den letzten Jahren sind auch Medizin-Studenten vom 4. bis 5. Ausbildungsj ahre an als Mitglieder aufgenommen worden. Die Mehrzahl der Mitglieder ist in Indien niedergelassen, die meisten von ihnen Eingeborne. Die Vereinigung vertritt den Grundsatz, dass Heilung der Kranken ein wesentlicher Teil der Arbeit ist, die der Kirche Christi aufgetragen ist. Ein Grundsatz, der auf der Missionskonferenz in Jerusalem seiner Zeit stark betont wurde. Die Vereinigung gibt u.a. eine zweimonatlich erscheinende Zeitung heraus, setzt sich kraftig für die Ausbilding von Aerzten ein und hat zur Gründung der vorzüglichen medizinischen Hochschule in Vellore beigetragen.

S U R V E Y OF T H E ACTIVITIES OF T H E MEDICAL CHRISTIAN SOCIETY OF FINLAND in the years 1922—1950 The Medical Christian Society of Finland was founded in 1922 on the initiative of physicians having worked in the mission fields. They wanted to assemble in the home country a group of colleagues which would understand and help the medical missionary people in a fuller way than had been the case. The founders were encouraged by the knowledge that in Dermiark a Christian society of medical doctors had earlier been founded with these same aims. In the initial meeting 11 members joined the Society, of these 5 were senior medical students graduating presently. In addition three doctors had announced by letter their support of the idea. The moment when the Society was founded, was in many ways disadvantageous. Only a few years before, Finland had gained her independence. Social and political activities attracted the minds of people, ever so numerous associations were formed. The spirit of the time was indifferent in regard to religious effort and often tinged with materialism. Among medical people mental life of a religious character was considered almost a morbid phenomenon. Criticism of religious activities was a courageous thing to do and it was often combined with contemptuous utterings against all spiritual life. These facts obviously had an influence on the action of the Society in its earliest years. Finnish religiosity is of a profound and contemplative kind.
