THE CIRCLE OF CHRISTIAN PHYSICIANS AND MEDICAL STUDENTS IN SWEDEN The Danish Christian Medical Association was founded as early as the year 1897, and a period of 41 years was to elapse before a similar association was founded in Sweden. To what can this long delay be attributed? I will try to point out one of the causes. Ever since the 1870's, Danish culture had been in a high degree influenced by the anti-Christian salvoes fired by the brothers Brandes, and it was not least in the medical faculty of the Copenhagen University that this influence made itself felt. In such a situation it was only natural that the Christian physicians should get together in an association to strengthen one another in the fight for Christian values. The situation in Sweden was quite different. Israel Hwasser, a prominent Christian in the cultural life of his day, was in the middle of the 19th century Professor of Internal Medicine at Upsala University. Not only did he exercise a powerful influence on his own generation, but, through devoted pupils, in particular Edward Clason, Professor of Anatomy in Upsala, he was instrumental in helping to form later generations of physicians. In the Student Mission Association founded in Upsala in the 1880's the medical faculty was during t h e first period strongly represented, and Professor Clason's son, Dr Fredrik Clason, who is still among us, is a faithful servant of the traditions from his parental home and of the interest in missions that seized him during his student years. An active force in Lund towards the end of the 19th century was Dr Seved Ribbing, Professor of Internal Medicine, another prominent Christian personality of his day and a highly esteemed physician. With such University teachers as Ribbing and Clason, the formation of a militant Christian front did not appear necessary. At the meeting of Nordic medical students held at Setnesmoen the Swedish students received strong impressions from the physicians and students from the other countries, especially from Norway, represented by Dr Heimbecl?; and the future medical missionary Jörgen Nielsen. Later on, significant contacts were made with members of the Danish Association of Christian Physicians and with Swedish physicians. With some colleagues Dr Henrik Berg of Stockholm attended the 25 tli anniversary meeting of the Danish Association of Christian Physicians in Roskilde in 1922. Under the impressions he took away from this meetin-? he invited a couple of physicians and some medical students to his home the following year, and ever since then there have been regular meetings of doctors and medical students, as a rule in physicians' homes, to try to study medical and social questions in a Christian light. The students became qualified in the course of time, and the circle was widened. We owe a deep debt of gratitude to Dr Sebardt, the son-in-law of the Professor Clason referred to above, for his frequent receptions of the members of the circle in his hospitable home. Dr Sebardt held
