30 admission of Christian students m Government institutions was severely limited but because of the fact thait the teaching was often under conditions alien to Christian Medical Work Three Christian Schools were set up, one for women m Ludhiana in the Punjab under Dame Edith Brown, one for men m Miraj by Sir William Wanless and one for women in Vellore by Dr Ida Scudder These were all schools m the sense that they took m high school graduates and trained them for the degree of licentiate, rather than the higher degree of Bachelor m the British system Over 20 years ago the Association felt the need for a Christian Medical College for All India, co-educational and training for the M B , B S degree After years of Faith, Prayer, Sacrificial Giving and Planning the School at Vellore was developed into such a Christian College The scheme far surpassed our expectations m many ways First, because of the fact that as a new College it had to meet the high requirements of the University, it has cost far more m money and required far more in the way of staff than was originally envisaged By reason of its plant worth over a million dollars and its staff and faculty of over 75 doctors this college of over 250 students is one of the finest professionally m the Orient More than that, the fears of many that because of the government emphasis on professional quality the College might follow m the footsteps of Peking Union Medical College have not been realised Staffed by many earnest IVCF and SCM members the College maintains and develops a warm evangelical religious life among the students With the shift in Government policy resulting m the closing down of Medical Schools the fate of Miraj and Ludhiana are m the balance Vellore can accomodate only a small percentage of the Christan youth who wish to study medicine and we would welcome a second Medical College m the North The expense of nearly $ 3,000,000 for such a college plus the tremendous difficulty m assembling a Christian staff with the qualifications necessary to meet the stiff requirements of the University make this look dubious It will probably be only a matter of a short time before internships will be required for license to practice The Association is therefore setting up standards for recognition of Christian Hospitals as suitable for intern training Ten years ago the Association took up the matter of training laboratory technicians and appointed a committee to study the matter A syllabus was drawn up, hospitals were recognized for such training and examinations and a diploma set up for Laboratory Technicians Training is now going on m seven such centers and more are to be added This policy was well ahead of Government policy which for many years insisted on a pathologist with medical qualifications assisted by untrained helpers Training m dispensing is also carried on m some hospitals and similar steps are now being taken to draw up a syllabus and recognize training centers in dispensing of drugs A class m Hospital Administration has also been opened m the Methodist Hospital at Bareilly Partly by subscription from her friends but mainly through the Hospital Sunday Contributions from the Churches during the last three years a Fund was raised m Memory of Dr B C Oliver, the former Secretary of the Association The fund is to be used for scholarships for Christian medical students The amount has reached about Rs 15 000 ($ 3000 odd) and the first scholarship will be awarded this summer The amount of scholarship will be sufficient to meet the tuition costs only and only one scholarship or two half scholarships can be awarded at a time so that it means that even with this amount we cannot aid more than two students every five years
