8 an organ of contact among all medical men that strive after spiritual revival of medicine, animated by christian revelation. By way of an experiment and as a first step he has proposed to have this number published, which is meant for the subscribers to the various national periodicals of Christian physicians. This plan he has realised himself in cooperation with Dr J. ten Kate, surgeon in the Hague. We thank these two colleagues here cordially. So it is a matter of an experiment and we request our readers to inform us of their comments and their vision for the future. We hope that this first step will provide us with the approach, the help and the cooperation of numerous colleagues in the efforts of publishing an international, interconfessional and all specialities comprising organ of Christian doctors. There exist numerous national societies — some international — of Roman Catholic and Protestant medical men. They have greatly differing traditions, news and tenors. But they are all an instrument in the same hand of God to help medical men more „to do His will" in their personal and professional life. To bring about a closer contact among them it is less important to come to new organisations, federations, committees and regulations than to make it possible to come to a continual exchange of ideas and experiences which can contribute to make us more conscious of our vocation with respect to our medical position. And what is the real point in this joint vocation? The point is: God, who has called us, our patients whom He sends us, and ourselves whom he has chosen. The point is God. Medicine participates in the secularisation of the modern world, which has made bold to break with God and His sovereign power over His whole creation. Nowadays only pure scientific studies are necessary to practice medicine. The moral qualities of the doctor, his religious faith, his surrender to God, his conception of life, disease and death may certainly be valued, but are under-estimated in comparison with his technical ability. The results are an indisputable decline of the moral level of the medical class, a specialisation carried through too far, a materialising and dehumanizing of healing art, which alarms all the adepts, even those who do not profess Christian faith. To us there is no other real answer to this than Faith. The point is that healing art may become, what God wants it to be. The point is our patients. The point is to treat them as well as we can. As they are not only psycho-physical machines but human beings, these cares cannot be exclusively technical and scientific. Dr Jores, professor of internal medicine in Hamburg, delivered a masterful speech about „the sense of being ill" on the occasion of his inauguration as Rector at the University of this school. The works of the psycho-analysts, those of the psycho-somatic school- and of many others, like those of Dr Leriche or of the school of Speransky-
