THE CHRISTIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION IN NORWAY The Norwegians are individualists Mountains, valleys and fjords separate one part of the country from the others, and this fact has formed one of the most distinctive traits of the Norwegian national character the desire of individualism to isolate itself For a long time It was difficult to unite the medical world as such And during the first decades Christian work among physicians was characterised by accidental aggroupments round certain leading men We may trace such groupings back to the 1880's O Borchgrevink was then one of the leading figures m the Norwegian foreign mission He was a clergyman and physician, a missionary m Madagascar A group of medical students and physicians gathered round him There was also no doubt a group round the prominent medical missionary Bendix Ebbell while he was a student There was a great activity m the Christian student world in Scandinavia in the 1890's And m these years the first Scandinavian contacts occurred The driving force m these years was Dr J Heimbeck, who was a general practitioner m Oslo During the next ten years the group increased m number, and about 1910 it looked as if a strong society of Christian physicians was coming into being m Norway At this time we find many names which are prominent m the Christian Medical Association of today The spirit of fellowship was strong m these years, and the activity great Interscandmavian contacts do not appear to have been much m evidence It IS probable that the first World War stopped this promising work At any rate, little work was continued till about 1920 when we find a group of medical students starting Bible study It appears that the medical missionaries m this period also have been active missionaries among physicians at home At this time physicians rallied especially round Olav Olsen, as the central figure (He is still m active service as a missionary) — The group of the 1920's was a firm and solid one, marked by good fellowship But it was a small, intimate circle Many of the medical students did not find then way to this little group, and many of the Christian medical students suffered shipwreck m the course of their studies, because they lacked community From 1927 a group of physicians gathered round the medical mission This association was the origin of the Christian Medical Association in Norway But the Christian Medical Student Circle was first founded in 1929 On the model of the corresponding association in Denmark, the medical students gave up their isolation, and started an attack on the medical world And during the last 22 years this circle has been an active Christian team, of great importance to many physicians today The Christian Medical Association numbers 200 members today, and more than half of them have come from the circle of the Christian Medical Students The other half have been drawn into cooperation through the Christian revival which swept Norway during 1934—1936 The Oxford Group was one of the leading forces m the revival, and a large group of physicians was won for Christianity, and they were active soulwmners withm their own profession This happy combination of the educational line through the circle of Christian Medical Students, and the revival line through the Oxford Group, formed the Christian Medical Association in its present shape It came into being with
