Kondhhk GEREFORMEERDE OECUMENISCHE SYNODE (III) i) In 1949 kwam te Amsterdam een Gereformeerde Oecumenische Synode bijeen. In „Geloof en Wetenschap" heeft Schouten toen m deze rubriek enkele opmerkingen gemaakt over het rapport van de Zuid-Afrikaanse prae-adviseurs H. G. Stoker, G Eloff en S. du Toit over het onderwerp „Schepping en Evolutie" en over de behandeling van dit rapport en het onderwerp zelf door de Synode. Door bevriende zijde is thans onze aandacht gevestigd op het rapport, dat aan de Synode van de Christian Reformed Church van de Verenigde Staten van 1953 door een door haar benoemde commissie is uitgebracht. Die commissie moest de Synode adviseren omtrent de te Amsterdam in 1949 getroffen beslissingen (,,Decisions") Haar rapport is afgedrukt in „The Banner", het officiële orgaan van de „Christian Reformed Church" van 13 Maart, p. 339, en we veroorloven ons het hier in zijn geheel over te nemen, omdat het zo duidelijk de zaken m hun verband weergeeft : Report of the Committee

To the Synod of the Christian Reformed Church, 1953 Esteemed Brethren : Your Committee on „Creation and Evolution" wishes to thank you for the confidence you have placed in us by appointing us to this Committee to advise you m regard to the „Decisions" of the Ecumenical Synod of the Reformed Churches held m Amsterdam in 1949. A Committee was appointed by the First Ecumenical Synod of Reformed Churches, held m Grand Rapids, 1946, to serve the next Reformed Ecumenical Synod of 1949 with advice regarding the problem of „Creation and Evolution". This Synod adopted the following three guiding principles : 1 „The historical character of the revelation in Genesis 1 and 2 must be maintained without compromise. These two chapters offer no data to justify a symbolical or visionary interpretation or to treat them as a meaningful myth. 2 „The tiue, completely trustworthy description by God of his work of creation is given to us m a humanly intelligible form, so that, although It does not constitute an adequate (that is, full, exhaustive) representation of this divme act, it is sufficient for us ito acknowledge and glorify him as our Creator. 3. „In maintaining the historical character of Genesis 1 and 2 the Church rejects all evolutionary teaching which either rules out God 1)
