The „base-line" level of secretion is determined by the osmotic pressure of the blood to which some region in the forebrain (probably the supraoptic nucleus) is sensitive. Stimuli arising in the external environment affect the neurophypophysis either by nervous reflex paths or, indirectly, by inducing a state of emotional stress.
