REVELATION AND EVOLUTION by PETER G. BERKHOUT By the term revelation we mean here general as well as special revelation. By general revelation we mean all that God reveals to man in nature, in the history of the nations and of individuals, and in the mind of man. It includes particularly all that is good and true and beautiful in science, art, philosophy, literature, and the like. It has an external, objective, aspect as well as an internal one : — the general operation of the Holy Spirit. General revelation is addressed to all mankind; but special revelation to „sinners, to whom God would make known His salvation" (Warfield). By evolution, particularly organic evolution, we mean that view according to which the various types of plants and animals, including man's physical existence, have their origin in other pre-existing types, the distinguishable differences being due to modifications in successive generations. There are mainly two types of evolutionists. There are the mechanistic or materialistic evolutionists, from Ernst Haeckel to G. G. Simpson, who maintain that it is entirely unnecessary to presuppose any supernatural agency who brought forth all the creatures that we see and who guides them in their destinies. And there are others, called theistic evolutionists by some, who believe that God is actively participating in every event of evolutionary progress. Since we are going to deal with science, it too should be defined. Natural science is that „branch of study which is concerned with the observation and classification of facts, especially with the establishment of verifiable general laws, chiefly by induction and hypothesis" (Webster's New International). One problem is how the two revelations are related. I readily grant that general revelation is nog sufficient, particularty not unto salvation. But the same is true, though in another sense, of special revelation. No less an authority than Dr. B. Warfield says, „Without general revelation, special revelation would lack that basis in the fundamental knowledge of God as the mighty and wise, righteous and good maker and ruler of all things, apart from which the further revelation of this great God's interventions in the world for the salvation of sinners
