SUMMARY Work is human activity; it is a God imposed task, in which a man experiences his greatness, but also, as the Bible tells us, undergoes punishment. Not being able or not being willing to work is in itself a sign of ill health. Work promotes psychosomatic health (death as the result of retirernent). Fatigue is physiological; over-rapid fatigue or overtiredness is pathological and is an early symptom of many diseases. Many persons, particularly women, suffer from constant overtiredness, the origin of which is organic. Sometimes neuro-vegetative dystonia plays a part in this. Work is often incorrectly thought to be the cause of this fatigue; then it is of psycho-social origin and the cause is to be sought in the working conditions. Too much responsibility often results in tiredness. In addition the modem tempo of living and our rapid means of communication contribute to the frequency of fatigue In the 'Manager-disease' too much work and too little relaxation sometimes brings successful lives to a sudden conclusion. Coronary sclerosis and infarcts of the heart muscle are also often connected with overwork. Ten per cent, of all large gastric haemorrhages occur when the patient is overworked and overworking. Professional men, particularly doctors, run the risk of falling ill through overwork. An uncurbed urge to work may be due to financial obligations or dust for money, but also to an unsatified desire for recognition. Some are overburdened by work on account of their inability to refuse anything. Restriction and selection, organization and method, order and system contribute to a man's ability to handle a large amount of work. Fatigue also manifests itself in those who do not know how to relax and who take insufficient holidays and rests. Work must not be allowed to become a hypertrophic element in a man's life; it can only be endowed with meaning and purpose if it occupies its rightful place.
