INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF CHRISTIAN PHYSICIANS
medical practice and civilization. Similar difficulties in the application of the scientific method to the problems of the whole man were noted by Dr. B. Harnik (Zurich) in his paper „Illness and Sin" and by Dr. A. C. Drogendijk (Holland) in his paper on „Faith Healing". Professor G. A. Lindeboom (Amsterdam) traced the origin and foundations of Christian medical ethic and stressed that the unique contribution of Christianity was not the establishment of a code of ethics, but the introduction into medicine of the element of compassion and sympathy for the underprivileged and outcast. Dr. J. V. Edmunds (London) showed similarly that while the superficial codes of ethics may change from generation to generation, there were certain underlying motives and principles for practice which remain the same. The problems of the control of life were studied in a series of papers by Dr. J. Janssens (Amsterdam), Dr. T. Takai (Japan) and Dr. G. den Otter (Haarlem). The duty of the doctor to provide, as far as possible, medical help for the underdeveloped countries was underlined by Dr. R. Blocksma (Michigan), Dr. C. Malmnas (Bromma, Sweden) and Dr. K. Gieser (Illinois). Both Dr. R. Eeg Olofsson (Stockholm) and Dr. E. Koop (Philadephia) emphasized that, in a sense, there was no concept of an exclusively Christian medicine. He believed that the Christian faith encouraged the achievement of the highest scientific, academic and professional standards applied with true Christian motivation. Herein lay the emphasis of this congress.
