avondzitting de bekende Dr. Lloyd Jones een address hield over „man's sickness and its healing," waarin hij op sublieme wijze naar voren bracht dat de grote ziekte van de mensheid is, dat ze zich niet stoort aan wetten en het woord gehoorzaamheid niet kent en dat er principieel maar één „treatment" is n.l. terug tot „the word of God". Voor ieder van ons viel uit deze briljante redevoeringen veel te leren, hoewel naar mijn gevoel het moeilijk is om dit op zichzelf ware woord aan een ongelovige medische wereld te verkopen. Niettemin moet er getuigd worden en dit congres was een getuigenis van wat het Christendom ook voor dokters in deze geseculariseerde wereld heeft te zeggen. In de eerste zitting heeft Lindeboom uit Amsterdam gesproken over „Ethical Principles in Clinical Research". Eén zin uit zijn referaat schijnt mij van bijzonder belang: „In the evaluation of a new drug, the use of placebos plays a distinct role. However, this may introduce an element of dishonesty. This becomes clearer in the double blind trial, which essentially undermines the relationship of confidence between the physician and his patient. The fact that unethical clinical experiments sometimes have yielded into beneficial results does not make them ethically justified". In zitting twee werd door Prof. Brobeok uit Philadelphia gesproken over Mechanistic Views of the Nature of Responsibility. De konklusie van dit betoog was: „As an animal with a mind generated by a machinecomputer, man cannot be held morally responsible for what he does. The Christian view of man, however, insists that he is responsible because the existence of God requires human responsibility. This conclusion cannot be verified by scientific means, since science analyses only natural phenomena in terms of mechanisms, subject to known forces". In deze zelfde zitting kwam het betoog van Dr. André Schlemmer (Parijs). Hij trachtte: „To show that scientific humanism, guided by rationalistic science and increasing control over nature, with its belief in progress in the field of human happiness, tends by its social egalitarianism to suppress personal responsibility. Scientific detei-minism, moreover, tends to deny responsibility in its denial of liberty. As Christians and as Doctors we do not believe in this kind of humanism which logically results in the dehumanisation of man by atrophying his Cod-given characteristics throughout reflexion: free-
