II shock-wave, with its resulting confusion as to the task of the Church in the world, only now has reached the Reformed Churches of the Netherlands, long after such was the case with the Dutch Reformed Churches (Netherlands largest denomination). Correspondingly, all kinds of issues (e.g. youth work methods, art, the ecumene, philosophy of science etc.. ..) get a delayed reception and treatment among the Free University people. From these facts, the question may be put (but left unanswered) whether the Church can fulfil its high calling in the world best, when it does not separate its academic students (and, for that matter, its highly trained academic specialists) from the unchurched ones. To put it differently; Is a looser tie between the Church and the University not conducive to a better understanding by the Church people of what is going on in the world, and to a more timely action upon it? Some blueprints The following observations and proposals will, after what is said before, be of no surprise to the reader. A. Christian people, especially those engaged in science and theology should be aware of the fact that a^ modern science is generally conducted in an „messianic" setting, within which there is only casually a place for God, ag though scientists may not have conflicts of conscience regarding the relation between faith and science,ii) there is ample reason for them to have genuine concern about the state of affairs, mentioned under ai, a3 the exchange of views and information between Christian scientists, philosophers and theologians should be conducive to a better effectuation of the Christian message to the world, a4 world of today = scientist + 4-th man, as the traditional splits between people of the type mentioned under a;, are a consequence of the limitations of individuals to comprehend the great variety of aspects of life, rather than that they point towards a fundamental lack of unity of life and human experience.
