kamers. Bij uw slaapkamer kunt ge een eigen badkamer met closet

krijgen. In elke kamer vindt ge een fonteintje met koud en warm

water.'

Saratoga Springs was nog niet ver genoeg in het Adirondack gebergte.

Hij ging met ds. Louis F. Benson (1855-1939; uitgever van de Presbyte-

rian Hymnal in 1895) naar het dorp Keene Valley. Dat was vlak bij het

hoogste punt van de staat New York, Mount Marcy (1.628 m), zodat

we aannemen dat hij deze berg heeft beklommen en de nabijgelegen

bronnen van de Hudson River heeft opgezocht. Hij beroemde zich er la-

ter op, een kwart eeuw het Alpinisme te hebben beoefend, 'dans la Suis-

se, Ie Tirol, les Pyrenees, Ie Norvège et 1'Amérique.'

In Keene Valley leerde hij aan tafel de heer en mevrouw Taylor uit

Rochester en dr. Lowrie uit Philadelphia kennen. Deze Amerikanen

zouden hem in november in hun kring introduceren.

Intussen verscheen reeds de eerste beoordeling van de Stone-lectures

in the Christian Intelligencer van 21 september. In dat weekblad werd

veel aandacht aan de inhuldiging van koningin Wilhelmina gegeven. Op

14 september verschenen drie fotos: Wilhelmina als meisje en als konin-

gin en van het Paleis op de Dam. Een week later schreef Griffis over de

'inauguration of Queen Wilhelmina'.

Midden in de reportage merkte hij op dat Kuyper ontbrak, omdat hij

te Princeton 'will protect, defend and illuminate Calvinism.' Vervolgens

schreef hij:

'The influence of the Queen and Queen-mother is strongly on the

side of historic Christianity, especially in its Calvinistic forms.

Whether Dr. Kuyper is the man, under God, to make the creed

of the heroes of the Dutch reformation once more dominant in

this and other lands is a question, and the issue unknown to us.

Yet, two or three things, unless I greatly misread certain signs of

the times, are Hkely to come to pass:

1st. That Calvinism, or that theory of the universe and of histo-

ry, and of the right relations between God and man, which rests

on faith in the Divine will, as well as in His wish, must, when

rightly started, win the strongest minds, and hold, and most po-

werfully, the best human hearts.

2d. That the true Dutchman is not likely to be permanently satis-

fied with any other creed than that stated by Paul, Augustine and

the scholar of Geneva, which is usually called 'Calvinism.'

3d. That Dr Abraham Kuyper, if not the ablest and clearest, is
