would answer me, she would not be a respectable girl and
I would no more love her". So he began to hope and soon
believed, that once there would come a day he would
make her acquaintance; then he would be absolutely happy!
S h e liked to go to bed early and lay awoke and
think of him, till at last she came to the same conclusions
and her greatest wish became, that he might speak to her.
But, as a respectable girl, she would not have allowed
him speaking to her in the street, so that she began to
wait for some miracle, that would came and bring them
together.
B u t . . . . the miracle had not yet come nor had the
day of making each other's acquaintance, when s h e was
forced to give up her place and even leave the town, so
that, one morning, h e did not meet her at the accustomed
hour and place.
H e never, saw her again. — Yet, they would have
been such a nice couple, and would have loved each other
so truly. — But it was impossible — because she was a
respectable girl!
