from rooftree to foundation c. The only remarkable feature

about it is an enormous i l e x , standing in front, and we

can easily understand, how in winter-time the poet loved:

>To trace

On paler heavens the branching grace

Of leafless elm or naked lime;

And see my cedar green, and there

My giant ilex keeping leaf

When frosts are keen and days are brief«.

VV'hat I wrote about T e n n y s o n was a little l i t e r a r y

note, which — concidering his residence for so great a

part of his life in the Isle of Wight — I thought might

interest you.

Of that kind there are no other notes, which are

important in the same way to us —• the Dutch. In pas-

sing — have you ever heard the name of M a x w e l l

G r a y and his novel >The Silence of Dean Maitland<, or

of Mr. H e a d o n H i l l ' s »The Spies of the Wight«, and

»Knight of the Needle Rock«, by J. W i l s o n , — ^ all novels

of the Island? But still, though these are said by English-

men »to make good holiday reading«, w h o of us would

ever choose such literature? Therefore I will pass them by,

and, remembering the warning words of the gray E u r i -

p i d e s : »Variatio delectat«, I will ask a moment of your

attention to a special h i s t o r i c a l note.
