are written the melancholy words:
»In the year of our Lord God, 1649, January
the 30th day, was Kinge Charles beheaded at White-
hall Gate.«
My readers will believe me, when I say, that the deve-
lopement of many mysteries on a number of historicaly
famous spots could be added hereto, but 1 will only make
mention of t h i s fact; otherwise I should keep you too long.

Lastly — before I say my short final word — a
remark about the p o p u l a t i o n of the Isle of Wight.
Numerous barrels ^) on the Downs, especially in the
western portion of the Island, one may say, point to the
fact, that its first inhabitants were of the C e l t i c race.
Perhaps it is true, for, as I found during my short
stay among the people in the villages, as V e n t n o r,
R y d e , S a n d o w n and other watering-places, — they
have the s i m p l e character and hearty manners of the
old, hospitable Gauls.
