Finally will the pedestrians, namely a middle-aged or

elderly man, or especially a young lady, a little older than

a backfish, sixteen or seventeen years of age (who-happily-

does not know any weariness), — particularly these persons

will find the ascent of the greater part of the downs a bit stiff.

But, once up, what a panorama is unfolded!

Not, as in the »Harz«, bleak, bare mountain-heights;

no!, a succession of smiling, pretty valleys, overgrown with

thick, thorny bush. And everywhere is the land of irregular

rhomboidal form, surrounded by the waves of S o l e n t and

the open S e a , which beat and dash against thousands of

rocks and stones.

T h e shores of the Island are deeply indented by

B a y s : A l u m B a y , celebrated for the colored sands of

its cHffs, red stone, cobalt blue, and chalk-white; F r e s h -

w a t e r B a y , with its caverns and isolated rocks, and

S a n d o w n B a y , with its majestic strand.

In this quiet retreat has lived one of Englands great

poets, T e n n y s o n , whose residence at F r e s h w a t e r has

made famous this little Isle, as S i r W a l t e r S c o t t s the

Highlands, and t o d a y H a l l C a i n e j t h e Isle of Man. "*
