FARRAGO 167

And the a t t e n d a n c e , during F i e l d i n g ' s visit,

seems to have been equivalent to that poor, comfortless

lodging. Having^complained vainly to the landlady of the

miserable ~sê7vice, fie addressed himself to the landlord.

>I don't know anything about it, sir«, replied he worthy,

»I leave all that to my wife.« But — the bills increased

daily. »A pennyworth of fire<, F i e l d i n g says, »rated to-

day at a shilling, to-morrow was eighteenpence. T w o

dishes dressed for two shillings on Saturday; half a crown

charged for the cooking of o n e on Sunday.« And, as my

informer remarks, when the helpless visitor asked for fresh

meat, he was told he could not have it »for the butcher

neyer killed ox or sheep during the beans and bacon

season!« . . . .

and cheap excursion-tickets are issued every day; a list of

first-class hotels and boarcïinghouses, as well as an abundance

of private lodgings is published there: and all this the

T i m e has done »the nurse and breeder of all good«, as

S h a k e s p e a r e says.

dation, the four-horse excursion-coaches are more enjoyable,

in rny opinion.

they not continue to flourish in spite of them? Nevertheless

there are many people, who are afraid to travel by coach.

T o these persons I will give the advice: Go to R y d e

and take the »Jubilee« on the Esplanade, because it is a

very, very safe one. The driver of the »Jubilee«, as you

must know, won the handsome Four-in-Hand Whip, presented

by Miss Lovell: he himself told us this.

Humbug! you say? Oh no!, not at a l l . . . .
