i;o FARRAGO
However — the interior of the Castle had been in
former years the scene of many cruel deeds. Even W a l t e r
S c o t t is said to have had C a r i s b r o o k e in mind, when
he versified in his »Marmion«:
>The battled towers, the donjon keep,
T h e loop hole grates where captives weep.
The flanking walls that round it sweep.
In yellow lustre shone.«
»The Castle gates were barred;
Above the gloomy portal arch.
Timing his footsteps to a march,
The warder kept his guard.«
T h e Castle stands there thus in its hoary antiquity
already.
Nevertheless — it was not more celebrated than many
other castles in the neighbourhood, until the C i v i l W a r
burst out with all its terrors and torments, — until the
bloody time of Charles I.

T h e history, concerning the i n c a r c e r a t i o n of this
King, during thigj'var in 1647, which event was the prelude
of Charles' d e a t h , two years afterwards, would be too
long, to relate now ^), but C a r i s b r o o k e C a s t l e has at
last got known from a historical point of view.
T h e visitor will find there a reminder of this story, for
a little board has been hung in that famous spot, with
t h i s inscription:
