But the inquiring tourist will probably ask: Who on
earth was >Little Jane«? — Who? —
The answer is always the same: »She was only a
most ordinary girl, who had the good fortune to say her
catechism to the satisfaction of her talented evangelical
clergyman. <
Now, because she suddenly died, only fifteen years
old, her memory has been vivid until t h i s day in the
hearts of the Brading-men . . . .
So simple are the people of the Island Wight!
Another characteristic of these people, typically English,
is their m a t c h - f e v e r .
Everywhere in the little villages — and often too in
the greater ones and towns — they organize mutual
matches in force and handiness.
I saw such a competition in R y d e : it was very
pleasant indeed! ^)
Childish, you say? Is it not their o n l y amusement?

It has not been my intention, to give an elaborate
description of this Isle: it was only my purpose — as I
have already said in the »Introduction« —, to sketch in
various, varicolored lines the beauty and peculiarity of this
Island.
Yes! I s l e of W i g h t , you are at once beautiful and
peculiar!
B e a u t i f u l in the m o r n i n g , when the splendid
