Van 16 tot 25 September jongstleden werd te Pittsburgh eene

reeks bijeenkomsten gehouden onder den eenigszins wijdloopigen

naam: Eleventh Council of the Alliance of the Reformed Churches

holding the Presbyterian System. O p een vroeger concilie van

dezelfde alliantie, in 1892 te Toronto gehouden, had het bezielende

woord weerklonken van hem, aan wien dit „In Memoriam" is

gewijd. Thans viel mij het voorrecht te beurt, tot afgevaardigden

van Presbyteriaansche kerken uit vier of vijf werelddeelen een

woord te spreken over „De Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederland."

ik toen o.a. gezegd •— cannot be given without drawing attention

to the influence of our two great masters in Systematic Theology,

Abraham Kuyper and Herman Bavinck. Kuyper was the greatest

among the fathers of the Doleance, Bavinck the greatest among

the children of the Separation. There is not time enough now

to speak about the different structure of their minds. Moreover,

I am convinced that the difference between them is less important

than the similarity. By different methods both have done one

great work. They have brought the adherents of the old reformed

truth into contact with modern spiritual culture. It must be ob-

served that, in the days of Separation and Doleance, the great

majority of our church members had no positive relation to the

general spiritual culture of their time. They lived spiritually in

past centuries. But Kuyper and Bavinck, each in his own way,

have shown them the great importance of the ,,Common Grace"

of God, working in the whole sphere of human life.

Men houde mij deze zelf-aanhaling ten goede. Ik meen, dat ze

door de omstandigheden is gerechtvaardigd. Te Pittsburgh moest

ik over een rijk onderwerp spreken, in zeer beperkten tijd, en in

eene taal die mij nooit bijzonder eigen is geweest. Daardoor was

ik gedwongen mijn kijk op personen en zaken weer te geven in

korte en niet zonder moeite gekozen bewoordingen. En als ik
