ontwikkelingen en eigen prestaties kritisch bezagen. Het was een kritische universiteit op haar best. Ik eindig daarom vanmiddag met een citaat uit de rede van de rector van Lund, Dr. Philip Sandblom, een citaat, dat te meer treffend is, omdat de rede werd uitgesproken voor de overweldiging van Tsjecho-Slowakije. "What is the task of the University in a world of violence - o u g h t it and can it be an academia conciliatrix or must violence be accepted as a necessary evil? We should agree upon the fact that nothing is more important at the moment than that all good forces in society are united to avert the impending crisis, the deadly epidemic. The universities have here a tremendous task. They should resolutely concentrate their powers with all available resources, in order to make plear to mankind that peaceful co-operation is its condition for life. They ought to keep in mind the scourges of violence through generations and to give everyone a clear conception of the new horrors that the violence in the world of technology keeps in readiness. Through fundamental research, universities can explore the reasons for violence and war and through objective research they can suggest steps for their prevention. Certain tasks are lying close, such as peace and conflict research, where historians, sociologists, psychologists, lawyers and technologists among others, work together, not only to explain the reason for and course of the conflict but also to investigate how at present and in the future these may be changed through the development of society and technology", i^) Moge later van de Vrije Universiteit getuigd worden, dat zij met haar gaven, haar mogelijkheden, haar geloof, in de spanningen van onze tijd metterdaad is geweest een academia conciliatrix.
