m attitude to life. At this meeting it was resolved that the Danish periodical should become a common Nordic organ with the title „Communications to Scandinavian Christian Physicians". The Swedes were strongly impelled to exchange their more informal activities for an organized association, not least with a view to facilitating cooperation with the three other Nordic countries, where organizations already existed. The Swedish association was formed the following year. The Nordic meeting that was to be held in Denmark in 1940 was inhibited on account of the war. But „Communications" (Meddelelser), which had been edited for 10 years in a very meritorious fashion by Dr Stubbe Teglbjaerg, often under extremely difficult conditions, could still be circulated, and during the war informed an exceedingly valuable communication between the Nordic countries. Sweden was able, moreover, during the war, to receive guests from Finland as well as visits by Dr Schou and Dr Lomholdt from Denmark, though both the Medical Society and the Medical Faculties had to join forces to procure entry permits for the visitors. When the war was over a strong desire was felt to meet colleagues from the other Nordic countries face to face. The longedfor Nordic meeting was combined with the 50th Anniversary of the Danish Christian Physicians' Association in Helsingör. There was a very large attendance, not least from Finland, and the Jubilee was celebrated with festive warmth. Lund was particularly well represented on this occasion. In this town there had long been a medical circle which had constantly been receiving valuable impulses from the Danish side. After the meeting in Helsingör, the Swedish association had to take over the editing of the Nordic periodical, which in addition to its old name was given the name: To Christan Physicians (this year replaced by: Christian Physicians). This periodical has tried to carry on the old traditions, and has also had a certain cooperation with an inter-Nordic organ — Christian medical students (Kristna Medicinare). The cooperation with the latter has been difficult as the Swedish medical students, with the exception of those in Lund, are for the most part not organized in associations of their own, but belong to the Swedish Christian Physicians' Association. Latterly the inter-Nordic organ has aimed at a certain international tone. Another expression for the literary cooperation between Nordic Christian physicians is the little devotional book ,,I Was 111", containing 30 contributions by Nordic physicians, about the same number from each country. Mention has already been made of conferences between physicians and members of the clergy in Sigtuna. Similar conferences have also been held in other Nordic countries. They have been valuable as an expression of the will to contact and mutual understanding. But the meeting of a large number of persons for a couple of AsS^ may certainly create a favourable point of departure, but scarcely any cooperation in the deeper sense. In order to compass this latter end, the Nordic Christian Physicians' Associations have aimed at organizing conferences between physicians and members of the clergy with jew participants meeting over a longer period. Such a meeting was held at New Year 1949 at a rest home near Oslo, and proved very fruitful. A similar meeting for doctors and members of the clergy from the Nordic countries has taken place in 1951 at Viggby holm School near Stockholm. The fourth meeting of Nordic Christian physicians in the summer of 1950 was held in Helsingfors. Many colleagues from this country were in attendance. But owing to the long distances, participants from the other countries were few. Instructive lectures were held and the meeting was marked by the greatest cordiality and intimacy. The next Nordic Congress will be held in Sweden in 1953. CARL LOWENHJELM, Upsala.
