62 THE FREE UNIVERSITY IN AMSTERDAM A N D ITS MEDICAL FACULTY by G. A. LINDEBOOM M.D., Amsterdam. The name of the Free University (Vrije Universiteit), founded in Amsterdam by Abraham Kuyper in 1880, indicates freedom from State influence as regards the instruction, but the professors, for their teaching, undersign the „reformed principles" of Christian faith. This Christian University is conscious to have also an international vocation. At the celebration of the 70th anniversary honorary degrees were granted to two outstanding foreign scientists (the Swiss lawyer Max Huber and the Hungarian historian Bohatec), and an international journal The Free University Quarterly was founded, which will appear foiu: times a year with an issue of 80 pages i). It may be noted that nearly every year a number of students of foreign countries (Hungary, South-Africa, North-America) are registered, several of whom take their doctor's degree here. The beginning of this academy, seventy years ago, was small: there were 5 professors and 13 students. In the first decades the growth was gradual in the three existing Faculties (theology, literature, law). In the last twenty years this process has been greatly accelerated by the constitution of a Faculty for natural science (1930), for economics (1947) and a medical Faculty (1950). In 1950 there were 37 professors, 15 other lecturers, and more than 1.300 students. The University originates from the „Association for higher education on a reformed basis", whose members are found in the Calvinistic part of the Dutch people. Perhaps there is no university in the world so rooted in the hearts of simple people of the middle class who have had no university education themselves, but support a university with their prayers and money. From the very beginning there was a great desire for a medical Faculty. The need was felt not only for Christian clergymen and lawyers, but especially also for Christian doctors who, entering their homes, would understand their particular difficulties and sufferings. For a long time the high costs seemed to prevent this idea from being realised. However, a start was made in 1907. In that year the Association for Christian Care of Psychopathies having five large psychiatric institutions, founded the Valeriusclinic in order to provide a scientific education for its psychiatrists, and gave a concession to the Free University for installing a professor with his staff. Since then L. Bouman, succeeded by L. van der Horst in 1928, has taught psychiatry there mainly to Christian students of the municipal Uni1) Price 10 Dutch guilders. Publisher: J. H. Kok, Kampen.
