REVELATION AND EVOLUTION

of the anomalies that we have to cope with seem vestiges of an earlier form; as, for example, the persistent branchial cysts which almost every doctor meets in his practice. Among scientists it is usually considered that paleontology offers the best evidence for evolution. To me it has been embryology and I notice that in a 1956 publication, Richards Harrington's „The Story of the Earth", the author states that embryology „is perhaps the most conclusive proof we have of the ttuth of evolution", p. 64. Hundreds of vestiges are pointed out in the human body, even in the blood. We need research scientists, particularly also in anthropology, to examine the evidence and tell us how much of it is true. But among us, an anthropologist is not even in sight. To the contrary, we have been told that young biologists among us better not aim to get a Ph. D. in their chosen field. The evidence for evolution seems so overwhelming that there is a fear that they may be led astray. That may indicate the weakness of one's own position. We remember how in highschool we were told that evolution was a thing of the past. When we did not believe it we were advised to read Dennert's „At the Deathbed of Darwinism". The one who gave us that advice evidenty never had read it himself because in the last chapter Dennert states his belief in evolution; but, since it happened so long ago, he did not think that any one knew how it occurred. Later we met some of our students at the universitv. One of them told us angrily, T wish I could go back and tell them how wrong they were in making us believe that evolution was dead. Others had their faith in God and their leaders shaken. Providentially, we had followed the sage advice of one of our prefessors not to laugh about evolution because, as he said, if we did not have our Bible, we would all be evolutionists. Today we still hear statements that evolution and Darwinism are dead and disproven. Some express themselves more cautiously, that it has not been proven. Do not let us delude ourselves, it is as much alive as ever. Even Darwin's views are not dead. After a hundred years his „Origin of Species" is probably considered to be ninety percent correct. It needs to be brought up-to-date and expanded because of new knowledge. Thus says Keith. And Dr. Lever tells us in his brochure on Darwin that it is unfortunate that we have fought him on the origin of species for a century because in that respect he is absolutely right, p. 23. A simple definition of evolution is variation and adaptation of organisms. That is the law of life. We are very much aware of that in
